St Leonards is built around one of Sydney's major hospital and medical precincts, and that gives the local vehicle population a rhythm you do not find in a commuter suburb.
Twelve-hour parking, not eight
Hospital shifts are long and they are not all daytime. A vehicle belonging to a shift worker typically sits parked for twelve hours or more at a stretch, and often through the middle of the day when the driver is on nights.
For a battery that matters in a specific way. A vehicle parked on an open deck from 7am to 7pm in February is taking the full thermal load of the day, every rostered day. Heat is the primary driver of permanent capacity loss, and a covered or basement space is a materially different environment from an exposed upper deck of a multi-storey.
The driving itself is gentle — short trips at odd hours in light traffic, shallow discharges, plenty of regeneration. Very few complete cycles accumulate. So the odometer on a shift worker's car is usually low and the battery's real history is mostly about where it sat rather than how it was driven.
Irregular charging is the other half
Shift work makes routine hard. Where a nine-to-five household plugs in at the same time every night, a rotating roster means charging whenever it is convenient — sometimes at the hospital, sometimes at home, sometimes not for several days, and sometimes to 100% before a long stretch away from a charger.
None of that is damaging on its own. It does mean the charging history is less consistent than average, and it makes the question "what did you usually charge it to?" less useful than it would be elsewhere. The measurement is more informative here than the owner's account.
The area's other pattern
Crows Nest and the surrounding streets are dense with apartments, many in older buildings with no EV charging in the basement. Those owners rely on public DC fast charging instead — several sessions a week, for years — which generates heat and accelerates capacity loss compared with slow overnight AC.
Whether a given vehicle had a charger in its building is invisible from the outside and shows up clearly in the numbers.
