The Shark 6 is a plug-in hybrid ute with a 29.58 kWh pack — larger than most PHEV cars — and it is covered by BYD's 8-year, 160,000 km, 70% capacity guarantee, transferable to a second owner. What makes it different from every other plug-in on this site is what it is asked to do: tow, carry, idle on site with the air-conditioning running, and cover long distances with a trailer on.

NEDC runs optimistic. On a ute weighing well over two and a half tonnes, expect the real electric range to sit well under the 100 km claim, and to fall sharply with load. The Blade lithium-iron-phosphate chemistry is the right one for this job — tolerant of full charges and deep cycles, and it is what lets BYD offer a capacity guarantee on a vehicle that gets used like this.

Why a work ute's battery history is different

A car's PHEV pack gets a commute. A ute's pack gets whatever the job is. Towing on the highway with a flat battery means the engine is carrying the whole load and the pack is being cycled by regeneration and generator charging in a way it never would be in a car. Running the vehicle-to-load outlets on a job site draws the pack down without a kilometre on the odometer. Long days parked in the sun on a Western Sydney estate put the pack through heat cycles a garaged car never sees.

None of this is bad for the vehicle. All of it is invisible on the odometer, which is why a Shark 6 with 40,000 km can have a very different battery history from another with the same reading.

What the assessment covers

State of Health as the pack reports it, cell-group voltage spread, temperature behaviour and stored or pending high-voltage codes. On a working ute the spread between cell groups is the number to care about — it is the earliest sign of a pack that has been asked to do too much, and it shows before range falls.

What to check before you buy

  • Measured State of Health against the published 70% floor

  • Cell voltage spread

  • How it was used — trade, towing, vehicle-to-load, or a family ute that mostly commuted

  • Odometer against 160,000 km — a working ute gets there fast

  • Whether it has had a recent full charge, which LFP packs need to report accurately
