The sixth-generation RAV4 is the first RAV4 sold in Australia as a plug-in hybrid. It carries a 22.7 kWh battery and claims 100 km of electric range on the WLTP cycle. Toyota's warranty covers the traction battery for 5 years with unlimited kilometres, extendable to 10 years with an annual Toyota battery health check — and excludes capacity degradation throughout.

A 22.7 kWh pack for 100 km WLTP is a credible ratio, and WLTP is the honest cycle. Expect 75–85 km of real electric driving in mixed suburban use, less on the highway with the air-conditioning working.

What Toyota's warranty does and doesn't do

Toyota's cover is generous on time and distance and specific about what it is not. The battery is covered against defects. A gradual loss of capacity is not a defect under Toyota's terms, so a RAV4 PHEV that has lost a fifth of its electric range at year six is — on the published terms — working as designed.

The 10-year extension is real but conditional. After year five, it requires an annual traction battery health check at a Toyota dealer, and a missed year ends the extension. On a used car, that means the service history is not just a mechanical question; it is the warranty. Full terms: Toyota battery warranty in Australia.

Why this car will be tested a lot in a few years

The RAV4 Hybrid is the best-selling hybrid in Australia by a distance, and the plug-in will follow it into the used market in volume. Unlike the conventional RAV4 Hybrid — a small pack in a narrow charge window that rarely goes deep — the plug-in's pack does a full cycle most days it is charged. It is a different battery living a different life, and the reconditioning industry that makes a conventional Toyota hybrid battery cheap to fix does not extend to it.

What the assessment covers

State of Health as the pack reports it, cell-group voltage spread, temperature behaviour and any stored or pending high-voltage fault codes. On a young car, the cell spread is the number that tells you whether this particular pack is behaving normally.

What to check before you buy

  • Toyota dealer battery health check history, which is the 10-year extension

  • Measured State of Health and cell voltage spread, with no capacity floor to lean on

  • Charging pattern — daily plug-in is the hardest life for this pack

  • Whether the car was used commercially, which Toyota's battery cover excludes
