Rockdale sits on the airport's doorstep, and that produces a battery pattern almost nowhere else in Sydney shares: vehicles left in long-stay parking for weeks at a time.
Three weeks in an open car park
Most advice about EV batteries is about driving and charging. Long-stay parking is neither, and it is genuinely consequential.
A lithium pack ages two ways at once. Cycling tracks energy through the battery. Calendar ageing happens whether the vehicle moves or not, and it is driven by two things: temperature, and the state of charge the pack is sitting at.
A vehicle left in an uncovered long-stay bay for three weeks in January is hot for most of that time. If it was also left at 100% — which is the instinct, because you want range when you land — then it has spent three weeks hot and full, which is precisely the combination that permanently removes capacity fastest.
Do that three or four times a year for several years and it adds up in a way the odometer never shows.
What to actually do
Leave it at around 50%, not 100%. A pack stored mid-range ages considerably more slowly than one stored full. You will have plenty to get home on.
Park undercover if the option exists. A covered or basement bay is a completely different thermal environment from an open deck, and the price difference is usually small against what you are already paying.
Don't leave it near empty either. Very low states of charge over long periods are their own problem, and a vehicle sitting for weeks still draws a trickle for its systems.
LFP is more forgiving — BYD, and Tesla's Standard Range and RWD models tolerate storage at higher charge better than nickel chemistries do. Establish which you have before deciding.
What that means when buying used here
A vehicle owned by a frequent traveller can have a low odometer and a battery history nobody would guess from it. "Did it spend much time in airport parking, and at what charge?" is an odd-sounding question and a genuinely useful one.
Most sellers answer honestly. Almost none have been told it matters.
